Perpetuum Mobile by johnmcintyre (2009-09-27)
Composed in Notion . 'Perpetuum Mobile' means: 1. Pieces of music characterized by a continuous stream of notes, usually at a rapid tempo. 2. Pieces which are to be played repeatedly. Based on a minimalistic ostinato, the piece is anti-developmental. Growth is accumulated, but not developed in a traditional Western manner. Instead, counter melodies develop and sound over top of the ostinato and main melody. By the third iteration, the counter melodies are fully harmonized and expanded through the use of imitation. Instrumentation: Piccolo, 3 Flutes, 2 Oboes, English Horn in F, E-Flat Clarinet, 2 Clarinets in B-Flat, B-Flat Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, 2 Solo Violins, Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Celli, Double Basses

Qoheleth by Len van Staden (2008-08-26)
MidiEngine: Microsoft Synth. Sequencer: Sibelius. MidiFont: None. I've had a young life's fascination with the book of Ecclesiastes. Attributed to Solomon, it is a literary and philosophical masterpiece and of great mystical import. What is the purpose of the human's life here? - Nothing really, is the emphatic answer. All our endeavours are to no avail. The title in Hebrew is Qoheleth. The two xylophone voices spell numerologically the refrain of Ch1:2 - Vanitas vanitatum, omnia vanitas, in the Hebrew, according to my own musical system of Gematria. I am still contemplating ways to bring in a syllabic Hebrew chant for choir. As it stands, it is an urgent yet patient lament to the One of the Universe for the plight of being a human.
